translift → fly911: Hey Mike. I'm in Fort Myers at the moment on the final few days of our powerline job here in FL. I saw some Mosquito control guys out today and made me think of you! If I get towards Tampa I will try to get in touch. Moving up to Sarasota tomorrow.

mwest29 That's quite worrying - I think they can field more aircraft then most developing countries! As long as they are only armed with cans of Red Bull :)

Pilot Information

  • Flight Experience I trained for my PPL in Ireland and then moved to Florida to train at Bristow Academy. There, I did my JAA CPL/FI and FAA CFII training. I worked at Bristow as an instructor on their 141/61 courses and I then switched over to the JAA side, also as a flight instructor. After Bristow I went to work at a flight school in CA as an instructor/ commercial pilot. I started at a company in MA in 2010. Doing aerial application and external load work for the Cranberry industry. I started on the ground, learning the basics, driving fuel truck and managing other ground crew. I was doing ferry flights and training at the same time. It's great fun and very challenging flying! I just moved to a new company doing powerline utility work in 206's and MD500's. Travelling the states and having a blast...

  • fly911 Thanks. I've been flying mosquito control for about 25 years, so I know quite a few from association gatherings and neighboring programs.

  • HeliFly Thanks was a total of 15 hrs in a Jetranger over a few days which was really great.
  • mlanger I have another R44 time-building flight coming up at the end of April: Phoenix, AZ to Wenatchee, WA. It's 10-14 hours, depending on route. I need $300/hour to cover costs. You must have an R44 endorsement and be legal to carry passengers (me). If you're interested contact me through Flying M Air, http://www.flyingmair.com/

Depends on the work I guess. I have flown in a schweizer at 40kts at night doing full downs with my chief pilot. In the work I do now (R44) doing external load, we call it quits at about 25kts or over. When I release empty mats from my hook, I run the risk of them being blown into my tail rotor. It gets pretty twitchy in a 44 at those wind speeds too.

I am fairly comfortable flying in higher winds, so as I said earlier, depends on the work being performed.

I agree 100%. I got my current job by knowing a guy who knew the owners very well. I didn't have any Robbie time at all and I still got the job.

350 hours is a hell of a lot more than I have. I agree, a helicopter is a helicopter. Once you can start the engine, I don't see the difference either. Hopefully you'll hear back from them.
