In my book, I explain how to create an ebook with the software. The ebook we create is about how helicopters fly. I need to show off the "gallery" feature, which enables users to create a slide show within the ebook. To do this, I need photos of helicopters. I'd rather give them some variety than to show the same old pictures of my R44. So I'm asking you to contribute your favorite shot of your favorite ride. It needs to be at least 1024 x 768 dpi. It CAN include a "watermark" with a company name, photographer name, copyright info, etc. There should NOT be a person in the photo. You must have rights to the photo to send it -- in other words, it must be YOURS. If you're interested in helping out, email me at misc@marialanger.com. I'll need all photos by about noon on Friday, February 3. Thanks for hearing me out.  less

Looks like 3 to 6 weeks starting late June. Wenatchee, WA area. R44 preferred. Pilot must have commercial rating and at least 300 hours PIC in helicopters with at least 50 in type. Pay is good but this is NOT a time-building job. Expect to fly 0 to 20 hours during that time. Was just contracted by one of the companies that books flights for me. Says that the mother of a 25yo woman who went missing from Scottsdale yesterday called and asked to spread the word to helicopter pilots with a description of the woman's car. Says we should call in if we see a gray Jeep Wrangler with a black soft top out in a remote area. Spread the word to other AZ pilots. I'd give the phone number, but I don't think it's for Facebook publication. If you do see it, I suggest calling the local cops.  less

I had gotten the motorsports edition, came with a nice protective case and suction cup mount. My one concern, is how to hook up the audio so i can get it plugged into the intercom system. I was planning to attach the suction cup mount to my helmet, but the camera has to be in the case. Not sure if i can fine a mic port with a small enough head on the plug to fit in the case. Any suggestions?

Need to make sure there's no extraneous dust on camera lens or inside camera case that can grab sunlight and make artifacts. Use clean, lint-free cloth. Be careful not to scratch anything. If the problem doesn't go away, you should proabably seek a replacement. Last year, I flew the Columbia River from Quincy to the Coolee Dam -- a distance of at least 100 miles -- and, when I landed, discovered a huge bug smashed onto the lens of my nosecam. Footage from about 1/2 of the flight was worthless. Ugh.

Where's the best food, what's the best FBO, what can you do if you're stuck there for a few hours or days. Some of you folks might want to contribute. They can certainly use some fresh content after the site having  been down for 6 months. Give it a look and add a tip or two. And spread the word. I'd love to see this site turn into a really useful resource for pilots.

So glad to see that nothing indicates that the pilot was being unsafe, but I can't imagine why he performed the maneuvers he did before the crash. The media is talking about the "routine maintenance" (?) of an engine replacement (!) the day before. I hope they figure out what happened. In the meantime, helicopter crash ambulance chaser Gary Robb is already filing suit for one couple against Sundance. This sucks all around.

As some of you know, I read and blog about a lot of helicopter accidents, but I'd somehow missed this one. It's an unbelievable case of stupid pilot tricks that reminded me a bit of one from 2001 that had happened not far from there with a Papillon pilot at the controls. In both accidents the pilots WERE pretty experienced but both had a disregard for safe operations and company limitations. This blog post reviews both accidents. I really think reports like these should be required reading for all helicopter tour operators. In fact, if I ran a flight school, I'd include them in the curriculum. I don't know why Wednesday's crash happened, but I sure hope that accident report doesn't read like either of these.  less

I did some mustering in Australia in 2008, which remains hands-down the best time I've ever had in a helicopter. It's undoubtedly a high-risk form of flying, although like most such activities there are ways to mitigate that risk. Some pilots do it more professionally than others (it's the "others" who cause most of the problems). The R22 is actually a great helicopter for the mission because it's small and responsive with good tail rotor authority.

So the flight is up for grabs. 10 hours in an R44 at $300/hour. I can accept credit cards. I am NOT a CFI; you must have an R44 endorsement to be pilot in command. If interested, contact me.

in the topic High Wind in the forum The Hangar

Springtime means high winds in Northern Arizona, where I do much of my flying. I've been doing a lot of aerial survey flights that require a lot of low-speed flying beside cliff faces and in/over canyons. Obviously, wind is a factor in maneuvering and the more wind, the tougher some maneuvers are.

What I'd like to know, however, is how much wind is TOO MUCH wind for flying?

At the Grand Canyon, they'd shut our operations down when the wind hit 50 MPH (seriously!) or one of the pilots claimed it was too windy to fly. Because none of the pilots wanted to be thought of as cowardly, we very seldom stopped flying because of a pilot's call. We were flying Long Rangers, with two-bladed rotor systems like my R44. My understanding is that 2-bladed systems are more vulnerable to problems than fully-articulated rotor systems. Indeed, the EC120s would often continue flying for another operator after we'd stopped.

But is there an actual NUMBER for windspeed that I should use as a rule of thumb? 50 MPH is a lot more wind than I want to be flying in. What's the "right" number to pull the plug on the type of flying I do for these surveys? Anyone have any insight on this that they might want to share?

This weekend's survey flights were postponed because of expected gusts up to 55 MPH in the area I was supposed to fly in. Fortunately, the client made the decision before I had to. But I'd like some feedback from more experienced pilots to help me set my "magic number."

Thanks. I'll likely follow up in a week or so. But I know from experience that the best way to get interviewed for a pilot job is to have a connection in the company. They get so many applicants. It's the only way they can distinguish who might work out for them.

You should be able to get in with Helicopters Inc with those type of hours.

I sent Helicopters Inc a resume before Christmas but haven't heard anything. I don't have enough turbine time -- only 350 hours. That's a big problem for a lot of employers -- although frankly, I don't see much difference between turbine and non-turbine aircraft once you get the engine started.
