translift: Hey Mike. I'm in Fort Myers at the moment on the final few days of our powerline job here in FL. I saw some Mosquito control guys out today and made me think of you! If I get towards Tampa I will try to get in touch. Moving up to Sarasota tomorrow.

About Me My name is Mike Muench. I was born in 1946 in Elizabeth, NJ. Married to a Jersey girl and living in Tampa Florida. Working at Tampa Executive Airport. When I was 5 years old I watched the TV show "Whirley Birds" with my little brother. We both thought that being a helicopter pilot would be the best job in the world. My mind has not changed much about that. I joined the Army at 16 and started Basic Training at 17. I tried to get into Army flight school but did not meet the age requirement, so I started flying at a military aero club. Got my multi-engine rating in a Twin Beech D-18 the day before I left for Viet Nam as a door gunner aboard a Huey Gunship. I used the G.I. Bill to get my R/W rating when I got out. I took a steady 9 to 5 job with a County Government spraying mosquitoes while raising a family. At first we used a Hiller UH12-E and later a JetRanger. After 18 years of that, I got into EMS flying a Bell 407, AStar AS350-B2, B0-105 and BK-117. Transferred from Evansville, In. to Columbia, SC and on to the Tampa Florida area. The (12 hour days) 7 days on - 7 days off (alternating days and nights) schedule was getting old after seven years, so I took another 9 to 5 County government job spraying mosquitoes again, flying a Bell 206. Mosquito Control work can be the most enjoyable flying there is. Do not count it out in your search for work.

Keep your eye on the prize, Danielle. There will come a time when you start your first flying job. The day when all that you have worked for, will arrive. Instead of you paying to fly, you will begin being paid to fly. It will be hard to stop smiling. The first time that you overhear "...Hey, she's a good pilot"... will make your hard work all worthwhile. Enjoy the journey.... Mike
