    I did not have any aviation experience before being trained by the Mesa Police Department once I became a member of the Air Unit. I went from Zero to Commercial Pilot all in the MD500E. I became a CFI last November and currently have 3000+ hours in the MD500E. It has been a great opportunity that just keeps getting better and better. I worked the street for about 14 years before getting in the Unit. This is more than necessary (only three years is required) but when I was hired in 1988 we did not have an Air Unit. We began leasing the MD500E's in 1993. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. MIke T.   less

I myself was just baaaarely 23 when I started fliyng back in feb. 08. there is a very good school that has great financing called universal helicopters. they have 4 locations, 1 in california, 2 in arizona and one in dodge city kansas. they offer training all the way through CFI which can cost close to $100,000, less depending on how well you naturally pick it up. I reccomend you check them out. www.universalheli.com I did not train there but I do know the owner/operator of the school gordon jiroux. UHI is a good avenue for up and comers and very good about doing their best to help you get financing. also gordon is a straightforward guy.  less

    I'm in Abilene. I know that Dallas at Fort Worth PD both have aviation units. It just seems odd that the police agencies want you to be a officer first then a pilot, when you think they would just want you to be a pilot.

    I was talking with a buddy of mine who recommended I possibly look into the PD route to becoming a helicopter pilot. Anyone here fly for a police department? How long does it take? How competitive is it? Do you have to already have your certs or does the agency provide the training?

    i had been out of high school for about a year and i happen to witness a car wreck and a medical helicopter landed on the highway and flew this one guy to the hospital. i really dont know why but from that day i wanted to become a pilot
