      scottswanberg Riverside huh? I graduated from high school there. I got my PPLH add on at Western in Rialto.

      AStarB3 I talked to Western before I started at CAS but the R22 was so much cheaper and Leo Bell is an amazing instructor

      scottswanberg I don't know Leo. My instructor was Bob Spencer and he was hands down the most knowledgable and professional instructor I have ever flown with.

      scottswanberg He would always ask me to hand over the controls for a few minutes of each flight. The results could be pretty thrilling. One time he did pirouettes while we flew (in a straight line, no less) down the taxiway. That takes alot of coordination.

As we passed over the final approach fix he lets out a resounding "OHHH SHIT". As the words ring in my headset I rip my foggles off drop the collective and bank hard right. I am surprised as I look to my left to see utter surprise and terror on his face. "What was that all about?" He asks me. "You said OH SHIT." "Ya because my phone went dead and I'm waiting for a TXT". After that we established a SOP for what constitutes an OH SHIT moment. After that we where flying along one day, again with me under the hood, when suddenly he grabs the cyclic and banks hard. I pull off my foggles just in tim to see a bundle of balloons fly past the windscreen..... "Now that was an OH SHIT moment was all I could say.  less

    AStarB3 → HELO HUMOR: Sullenberger's not so great. You know what a great pilot would have done? Not hit the birds. That's what I do everyday, not hit birds, where's my ticket to the Grammy's?

      scottswanberg There are two kinds of pilots. Those who have had bird strikes (or in my case a bat strike), and those who will. You want to give your Grammy ticket back when you join the latter group?

    the pitch angle of the blade is the difference in angle between the chord line and the reference datum. the reference datum is an imaginary line perpendicular to the rotor mast. angle of attack is the difference in angle between the chord lie and the relative wind

    relative wind is the combination of all airflow over an airfoil. in the case of a helicopter reletive wind comes from the rotation of the rotor head, movement of the helicopter in any direction, atmospheric wind, induced flow from the creation of lift and from flapping or leading and lagging

    (c) For a helicopter rating. Except as provided in paragraph (k) of this section, a person who applies for a private pilot certificate with rotorcraft category and helicopter class rating must log at least 40 hours of flight time that includes at least 20 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor and 10 hours of solo flight training in the areas of operation listed in Sec. 61.107(b)(3) of this part, and the training must include at least--

    (1) 3 hours of cross-country flight training in a helicopter;

    (2) Except as provided in Sec. 61.110 of this part, 3 hours of night flight training in a helicopter that includes--

    (i) One cross-country flight of over 50 nautical miles total distance; and

    (ii) 10 takeoffs and 10 landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport.

    (3) 3 hours of flight training with an authorized instructor in a helicopter in preparation for the practical test, which must have been performed within the preceding 2 calendar months from the month of the test; and

    (4) 10 hours of solo flight time in a helicopter, consisting of at least--

    (i) 3 hours cross-country time;

    (ii) One solo cross country flight of 100 nautical miles total distance, with landings at three points, and one segment of the flight being a straight-line distance of more than 25 nautical miles between the takeoff and landing locations; and

    (iii) Three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport with an operating control tower.

    Now that does raise some questions. Again if you do have to land I should not have received my PPL. If you have an AOPA membership I would give them a call. In my IMHO a hover is a full stop but the people at AOPA are good about answering these kind of questions

    (a) General experience. (1) Except as provided in paragraph (e) of this section, no person may act as a pilot in command of an aircraft carrying passengers or of an aircraft certificated for more than one pilot flight crewmember unless that person has made at least three takeoffs and three landings within the preceding 90 days, and—

    (i) The person acted as the sole manipulator of the flight controls; and

    (ii) The required takeoffs and landings were performed in an aircraft of the same category, class, and type (if a type rating is required), and, if the aircraft to be flown is an airplane with a tailwheel, the takeoffs and landings must have been made to a full stop in an airplane with a tailwheel.

    as you can see the subpart that requires a full stop only applies to a tailwheel equipped airplane
